Synopsis of Pamahaw: Here & There
April 21, 2010
As I was having my breakfast this morning, my mind was lingering on the foods I had for breakfast back in the Philippines. Such gastronomic memories is hard to reckon with the foods I have here in Canada. But, my breakfast this morning was close enough to bridge the gap in flavors my taste buds was pampered upon for three weeks. Come on, let’s check it out for the last time as I present to you a synopsis of PAMAHAW or breakfast, Pinoy/Ilonggo style!
Here….

Here's our version of pamahaw, made up of garlic fried rice and two side dishes.

If one has discernable tastbuds, one will notice a subtle difference of flavor in longanisa (sausages) and the itlog na maalat (salted eggs). When we eat these foods here in North America, we instantly cross-reference them to the one we have back home. Slices of ripe tomatoes is a good pair for salted eggs and/or longanisa. It balances out the saltiness of the eggs and the greasiness of the longanisa.
There….

JD's Rice Square in Iloilo, the ultimate all-in-one breakfast, literally!

Breakfast at Marina's Restaurant in Makati. The unbelievably most unique of them all... it has 5 kinds of side dishes plus slices of tomatoes and atsara (pickled green papaya). One has the chance to savor different foodstuff such as sunny side up egg, longanisa, tocino, salted dried danguit fish, and beef tapa! How about that for a challenge?

Nothing beats home made breakfast! Here we had bestek and binurong bilong-bilong. My sister-in-law Bebet prepares sumptuous daily breakfast with extra load of Ilonggo dishes (most times).

After a sumptuous breakfast at home in Iloilo, Guimaras mango will help settle one's full stomach. Or not?

It may sound strange but, it’s true… my last breakfast in the Philippines before heading back to Canada is all about that I will be posting today. I could still remember a week ago, I ate my breakfast in MARINA (of course, where else?) at the Glorietta mall in Makati. It seems like I couldn’t be satisfied with Ilonggo foods in particular. For the past three weeks I had been pampered by my youngest brother and his wife of Ilonggo foods, especially breakfast. Allow me to use the word BRUNCH, as the foods they prepared are huge in servings and can cover lunch, as well. Thus breakfast-lunch, brunch! Here we go.

I would say this is breakfast galore! My American friends will have a feat once they see this picture.

Yes, my dear friends, this is breakfast in Marina Seafoods Restaurant in Makati. The garlic fried rice is central to different favorite Filipino breakfast like, tocino, tapa, sunny-side up eggs, danguit daing & chorizo or langonisa. Side dish includes sliced tomato & atsara (pickled green papaya). I will be missing PAMAHAW of this magnitude back here in Canada.

Fall is almost right at its tail end here in Southern Ontario and today, the weather is exceptionally milder and a balmy 18 degrees Centigrade for the high! This gives us a window to clean up our yards of fallen leaves piling up. This is the downside of fall. After enjoying fall colors for two to three weeks, “curtain time” follows, as leaves fall off to the ground and blown by the wind. Raking leaves and fill them into the garbage bags is a laborious task. Such undertaking certainly requires a chunk of energy and that’s why a big breakfast is a must. Check out what we have for breakfast or pamahaw (in our dialect).

Typical Pinoy breakfast includes rice (fried rice is preferred, if available). Our Caucasian friends are amazed by us because we eat rice at breakfast, let alone lunch and dinner!

Red fresh tomatoes, salted eggs and 2 kinds of longanisa (Bulacan & Vigan).

A bowl of fresh fruits rounds up our breakfast.

Breakfast Galore!

Everyone in the household seem to be motivated to go out for breakfast this morning. No doubt, everyone has been briefed of the plan the night before by my chef. So, we decided to go to the Golden Griddle, a family restaurant located along the corner of Upper Ottawa and Fennel Avenue in Hamilton mountain. The ambiance inside is fine but the most notable thing is that, the servers are friendly and very accomodating. The Golden Griddle standsout truly as a family restaurant! To my amazement, there are two young budding chefs around, ready to help customers of their short orders.

Golden Griddle Family Restaurant is a chain restaurant.

The pancake table with an array of different pancakes and waffles. The breakfast buffet is $12.99 per person.

Two lovely chefs Jessica and Alex (with permission to post their pics), ready to give a hand just in case one wants some short orders.

Everyone's favourite, pancakes and sausages.

Big breakfast order with peameal bacon, eggs, hashbrowns and fruits.

Various fresh fruits, pizzelles and crepes.

My personal favourite, Belgian waffles and crepes with strawberries and peaches.

There's room for French toasts with fruits!

All drinks are limitless!
